Fireworks on 14th Street Go figure it’s as old as the trees You got a woman who’s not easy to please And you’ve got brothers and others to see I got all of my heroes to be That’s okay, I’ll drink this on my own I like this bar, honey get off the phone They’re hitting doubles with no sound on the TV I've got all my heroes to be I’m seeing it history All sides of a killer tune I lasted a couple a rounds Did you miss me How you doin’ It’s empty, the heart of that girl You missed it when I gave it a whirl Well she’s got troubles and puzzles to defeat I've got all of my heroes to be In this inning salvation arrives Since I’m winning tonight I survive They’re lighting fireworks on 14th Street I've got all of my heroes to be I’m seeing it history All sides of a killer tune I lasted a couple a rounds Did you miss me How you doin’ too I've got all of my heroes to be I've got all of my heroes to be I've got all of my heroes to be

It’s so damn true It never seems to take a break for a while It’s so damn true I’d rather run through fire than have her put me on trial She told me to wait in line I said okay that’s fine But then I waited way too long Here comes the bad news Here comes the bad news It’s so damn true I guess my car just ain’t good enough It’s so damn true I think some of my great records got tossed out with some of my great stuff She told me I’m wasting time I said I know but I’m waiting for the perfect rhyme She said I’m waiting way too long Here comes the bad news Here comes the bad news It’s so damn true Sometimes I get hungry around 11’oclock It’s so damn true Some nights I go for a walk and never make it back It’s so damn true Sometimes I drink and call her names that ain’t so cool It’s so damn true I better run, my motor’s runnin’ like that tune that hit number two It’s so damn true A guitar is beautiful but my girl is too It’s so damn true The sky is grey it’s better that way better than being blue It’s so damn true Things ain’t so bad Things ain’t so bad Things ain’t so bad Things ain’t so bad Things ain’t so bad Things ain’t so bad Things ain’t so bad Things ain’t so bad

Dirty Rock n’ Roll dreams Above the clouds they ride I get on my bike and go The gravel is broken ground I don’t see nothin’ kind for you in the sun I see why you feel under attack and gotta’ run I don’t feel lonely, but I feel misunderstood It’s not you only I feel the weight of it too I know, I know, I’m not trying to be some kind of victim I don’t care what you believe, the truth is yet unwritten Everybody was kind when we were all lost in the snow I thought for awhile I had me a place to go Hey get on your way, the day is almost here Hey just listen to that New England tide disappear (Break) In the trees the cottonwood Ah they do the best they can The great birds choke on the battle time and time again I’d rather take it and soar gloriously You’re a sinking boat without a paddle It’s no place for me (Break)

I’ve never wasted any love with you My girl’s the best thing a man could ever do And oh the fighter planes that haunt and touch my brain And oh the fire escape looks on Gonna fight to pay the rent to eat Gonna love the time we lay in the heat And oh the fighter planes that haunt and touch my brain And oh the fire escape looks on Take a simple call from heaven On and on, have a cup of tea On and on, bet your life on far away love On and on, bet your life on me I’m gonna walk the line like others walk But I’m gonna keep my mind Be free for thought And oh the fighter planes that haunt and touch my brain And oh the fire escape looks on I’m gonna hold you here the one in my life You call it destiny I call you my wife And oh the fighter planes that haunt and touch my brain And oh the fire escape looks on Take a simple call from heaven On and on, have a cup of tea On and on, bet your life on far away love On and on, bet your life on me I’m gonna fight the millionaires cause I ain’t one I gotta go, I don’t care, I gotta run And oh the fighter planes that haunt and touch my brain And oh the fire escape looks on I’m gonna kick the can down on my street I’m gonna cut away the mist that makes me retreat And oh the fighter planes that haunt and touch my brain And oh the fire escape looks on

In the season, will I care for the wind Casue I never know A little time is set on fire Come in from the cold Oh the walkout kid Embrace all your sins In cars there’s whiskey to be downed Everyone surely knows Carry me to the summit down Where angry men withhold And I’ll – our world is a simple day I’ll do it all in the second show Oh I look around The hand is on the stone And I’ll be the one to calm All the calls to come Hand me a simple idea Hand me the timing of old All the high rock walls to climb Step on the son of the shown And the teardrop guitar I own Leans against the wall Any Sunday I’ll be found Wandering by the falls Cast it and settle down All forces to the wind I live to lay it down And now we slow it down To handle a year of song Call it a settled town Where once was a stormy sinner now Ah, there’s never been a wander Wander or else and then How clean is the water out there Has the window been broken And how is your path to getting there Selling off is more trick And oh it’s a time keepers game And oh it’s never too late

Janey lives in the car pool lane But she drives alone every mile I heard once the FBI was putting together a file It’s okay if the thought in your head explodes one day and you die You’ll be living high - way in the sky with scholars, punks, who knows why I got lost in the Three Chord Preacher Bet my life on a four minute cry Ain’t she something I said to myself then So much of this game is a lie You got time to go to the races You got time to dress in style I hear there’s an appreciation For tough broads who know how to smile You’ve got walls in the corner of your mind You’ve got love I know that you do I’m running away to join the millions who live in the city and sing out of tune Break

He ran guns to Elmira Took aim at that that kid at Sheepshead Bay Abandoned his sister in AC She’s still missing today There goes Johnny Psycho The King of the lane But the Lane’s a rotten place to be There goes Johnny Psycho Don’t let him catch you looking Fought the war in Chinatown Cracked a rib from the foot of a high kick priest Drives around in an old Benz Cars got class but it ain’t got no heat There goes Johnny Psycho The King of the lane But the lane’s an impossible place to be There goes Johnny Psycho Don’t let him catch you looking Lost a finger in a car door slam An old Chevy with rust everywhere I hear he went back to get it And found it by the curb in front of Dance like Fred Astaire There goes Johnny Psycho The King of the lane But the Lane’s a rotten place to be There goes Johnny Psycho Don’t let him catch you looking Had a girl once on the east side It was a place to go get something to eat One morning he woke up crying about something Then he shot her while she was asleep There goes Johnny Psycho The King of the lane But the Lane’s a rotten place to be There goes Johnny Psycho Don’t let him catch you looking Where’s the law

She’s a frightened statue A sea wind is all she feels She acts as though you’re absent The rain is all she reveals She’s a soft light Simple as a dance She’ll say how far away Then give you just a glance She sings only sad songs She’s a wounded dove Never the first to cry She’ll never take to fleeing Was never good at saying goodbye She’s among the rocks Where sky skyscrapers kiss the sun She sings only sad songs She’s a cool army of flowers Beneath the burning sky Who are you to be silent When ever she walks by She’s an old road less traveled Where all you hear is drums All I can see is dreams until the marching season comes

Who needs you Gladly greets you Even treats you like the only one It’s your soul Again recreating I don’t care I’m a disciple of waiting Who buys all your Clever thinking Stays up all night with you drinking It’s your soul Again recreating I don’t care I’m a disciple of waiting When is it ever That your endeavor Is taken to heart by those you hope to impress It’s your soul Again recreating I don’t care I’m a disciple of waiting How are you whole When half the people you know are asleep When will you smile like all the others on your street It’s your soul Again recreating I don’t care I’m a disciple of waiting
13.
You said you are my one and only You didn’t love me you just left me alone I walk the streets searching for light But there is no peace in sight Everyday is a heartache All my love’s love’s used up She made a fool of me Don’t know why I can’t see I leave behind me this life forsaken And a stupid girl I couldn’t take I walk the streets searching for her every night But she is no place in sight Now Everyday is a heartache Another promise she can’t keep She waits around just to see my heart break Wonder why I can’t see I can’t see Heart Heart

about

Fireworks On 14th Street

Twelve of the fourteen songs on this album are duets. This is veteran rock n’ roll artist Cody Melville’s ninth album and follows his 2015 release Saints & Sneakers on a Wire and the 2014 release Downtown Angels. This record features his friends, all great guest-singers mostly from the New York music scene: Andy Shernoff (The Dictators), Larry Kirwan (Black 47), Brijitte West (New York Loose), Tom Clark and Craig Chesler (The High Action Boys), Owen McCarthy and John Melville (The Everyothers), Jesse Bryson (The Robin Electric), Jeff Ward (The Electrajet), George Gilmore (The Giblets), Jeff Shoemaker (The Plugs), and Rory K.

It’s a roots rock record that blends and bends around the genre. At the core of these songs are melody and a memorable narrative. Some are dark, some less so. All the instruments were played, produced, and recorded by Cody. On two of the tracks he sings solo. Two were co-written: “Everyday Is a Heartache” with Detroit powerhouse Jeff Shoemaker and “Murder” – with the kid on the record – Rory K.

In Cody’s background is an EP produced by Mick Ronson. He has recorded and collaborated with Brian Richie of the Violent Femmes, placed songs in films, played countless gigs, and currently lives in New York City.
